VoilamartQA How to choose a hub motor wheel ebike conversion kit for your bike – The size you should check befor purchasing

Hi, First of all, thanks for your interest in turning a pedal bike into ebike. But I wanted to create an article series to illustrate how you should choose the right e-bike conversion kit for you and your bike.

This one I will talk about and explain some of the dimensions of the frame: Wheel Diameter, Dropouts, Axel Catcher size, and Tire Width fitment. I will try to find some example pictures to illustrate this, and the only tool you will need when you face this problem is a ruler. Of course, it needs to be long enough.

The dropout also means the places of a set of bike frame to catch and fix the bicycle wheel’s axel, and there’s two type: Front Dropout, and the Rear Dropout.

Actually I think it’s for fits with the wheel hub, so both dropout should measure the inner side to the other inner side.

1.1, The Front Dropout should measure the axel hook’s inner to inner, and you’ll get a width between them. And for Voilamart normally front wheel conversion kits they would fit with 100mm Front Dropout (about 100~103mm or 3.94~4.00in width).

1.2, The Rear Dropout also a width between both inner sides, and for Voilamart rear wheel conversion kits they would usually fits with 135mm Rear Dropout (about 135~137mm or 5.315~5.39in width)

1.3, Also theres some wider dropout type for Fat Tire Bikes, Beach Cruisers, or Snow Bike. These would be different in the parameters, but you still can get them by a ruler, it’s easy.

    2, Wheel Diameter.

From the bike frame, you can get the wheel diameter by measuring the length between axel dropout hook and the bottom bracket(for rear wheel) or fork bottom(for front wheel), just like the picture above shows. In this way you’ll get a “Half Diameter of Wheel”, so you should know the diameter by “2 x Half Diameter”.

But if you’ve got a whole bike, maybe it’s easier. You can just find the tire info on the tire, they’ve been mark on the tire surface and shows as form like “wheel diameter X tire width”.

    3, Tire width.

Yes, the 3rd I’ll mention is the tire width. It’s measured in much the same way as the dropout, but the measure way will be closer to the bottom bracket and the fork bottom. You should figure out the Max Awailable Tire Width of your bike frame, and then choose the right tire.

If you install a over-wide tire on the wheel, you’ll mostly find that the tire will get touch with the bike frame, and the wheel would been fixed, unspinable.

    4, The Dropout Space.

The measure way is in the picture, and for Voilamart Hub Motor Wheel Ebike Conversion Kit, all the hub motor axel is oval in 10 x 9 mm Dia.

Now, the 4 info of your bike / bike frame should confirm before purchasing ebike conversion kit and turns it into electric bike, are all above.

Before starting turn your bike into ebike, I think there’s another info you should know: the dropout of the hub motor wheel is fixed and can only be changed in small amounts by spacers. The rear wheel can only be mounted at the rear of bike frame, and the front wheel can only be mounted on the front fork.

Purchasing the wrong item, would suffer the highest cost. You can return the item, but your time has flowed.

Let’s check before purchasing and save your time.

In next, we’ll talk about the Voltage of Ebike System , click to open it in a new window and don’t miss it.

  • VoilamartQA, How to install the Linerpull Bike Brake

VoilamartQA, How to install the Linerpull Bike Brake

This content is not for making the bicycle brake on your bike become the best brake in the world, but I think this simple way could help you to make the linerpull brake system on your bike better.

And this is the way I would usually using while building my DIY bike, just hope this would help you:

    Step 1: You can put the brake lever over the handlebar, and then screw the retaining ring screw halfway-tight (able to be turned, but with a damping when turning, for subsequent adjustment of the angle of the brake handle to make the brakes more comfortable) by hexagonal screwdriver or Phillips screwdriver(fits with the brake lever’s screw);

Step 2: Then hang the Hammer Head of the brake cable to the innner side of the lever (like the photo following), and unscrew the Brake Cable Adjustment Screw from the brake lever by about 3~5mm.

Step 3: Then squeeze the brake caliper by hand, make the brake caliper catch the bike wheel, then pull the brake cable tightly, and fix the brake cable on the caliper side.

Step 4, then you can screw the Brake Cable Adjusting Screw mentioned in step 2 into brake lever, to loosen the brake clamp from the wheel.

Step 5: Adjust the brake lever into a more comfortable grip angle, and then continue to tighten the retaining ring screws that were half-tightened in step 1

Actually the unscrewed adjust screw in the step2, is for making the brake space for the brake caliper, so in step 3 you could pull the brake cable tightly without worry, the brake caliper would release the bike wheel while you screw tight the adjust screw.

Hope this would help you 🙂

  • VoilamartQA How to choose a hub motor wheel ebike conversion kit for your bike – The voltage selecting

VoilamartQA How to choose a hub motor wheel ebike conversion kit for your bike – The voltage selecting

Just imagine, you have a balloon and also a metal high pressure air tank, they have the same volume, which one will contain more air?

According to US aviation related regulations, travelers are only allowed to carry batteries of up to 300 watt-hours on board. However, the batteries we usually see are labeled in the format of “Volt-Ampere-Hours”, so can my battery be carried on board? This article may help you.

    First of all, watt-hours = voltage X amp-hours. So, if you have a 48V 15AH battery, I’m sorry, but 48V X 15AH = 720WH, and that battery will not be allowed on board. Then if the battery is 48V, 300 watt-hours means only 300WH / 48V = 6.25AH. But if the battery is 36V, 300 watt hours means 300WH / 36V = 8.33AH.

However, for some reasons, the 36V hub motors can only be produced up to 1KW, while 48V motors can up to 2KW. As said in the opening example: Voltage can be thought of as the pressure of electricity, and current as the speed at which it flows.

If you think of a battery as “a storage bottle for electricity”, isn’t it easier to understand the battery’s “Amp-Hour” (also shows as “Ah”) as “how many amperes electricity could output from the battery in 1 hour”? I think the answer is: yes.

It’s true that a 36V battery takes longer to do the same thing than a 48V battery because it’s less “stressed inside”. But if you compress the time to the same length, then the “amp hours” of a 36V battery will be higher than that of a 48V battery. That’s why a 36V battery will have more amp hours than a 48V for the same 300 watt hours. So, if you need to carry batteries on board, I would recommend the 36V system.

But as said above, a motor adapted for 48V puts out more power. If you have a requirement for the bike to carry heavy loads, or need to go uphill, the 36V system may not be able to accommodate that.

Overall: If you only need a daily ride, perhaps the 36V system will suffice. It can ride farther on the same amount of power. But if you need to ride with a heavy load, or if you need to go uphill, a 48V and higher voltage system might be better for you.

  • VoilamartQA about the Freewheel couldn’t spin freely

VoilamartQA about the Freewheel couldn't spin freely

This is an article about the freewheel in ebike kit package.

Hub motor has a different shape of hub shell so a spacer between freewheel and hubcap might help.

Gear part of freewheel got touch with the hubcap is the mostly reason make the freewheel couldn’t spin freely.

Freewheel spacer between freewheel and hub motor could let the freewheel gear part and hubcap alone and fix this problem.

This is an article about the freewheel in rear hub motor wheel ebike kit’s package.

Some rider would find that the freewheel couldn’t spin freely after install to the rear hub motor, what’s happened!?

    The hub of hub motor wheel has a different hub shell than the normal one for pedal bike, it’s hubcap is much flater than normal one, this is one of the factors;

And the second factor is that the thread part of freewheel is not higher than the gear part, eventhough it’s position is lower than the largest gear!

A lower thread install to a flater hubcap, make the gear part easier get touch with the hubcap and been fixed, then the freewheel couldn’t spin freely.

In this situation, a freewheel spacer could make the freewheel leave the hubcap a bit, but enough for the gear part and the hubcap stay alone, so the problem could be fixed.

  • QA-Troubleshoot about the ebike kit system couldn’t turns on

QA-Troubleshoot about the ebike kit system couldn't turns on

Step1, Checking the voltage of the battery, the 36V battery would shows about 41 volt, and the 48V battery would shows about 50~52 volt; Step2, Checking the connector between controller and On/Off switch part (usually the throttle or LCD monitor), check if the pins of male plug side has been crooked. If above 2 has been checked and looks ok, then should consider it’s the issue about controller or (and) throttle been broken or burnt out.

  • VoilamartQA about ebike brake lever

    VoilamartQA about ebike brake lever

This is an article about the ebike brake lever, especially for the Low Electric Level Ebike Brake Lever  (this link would open another browser window to show so please feel free to click, you won’t miss this content).

The operation principles of the low-electric-level brake handle , is that while it connects with the brake handle cable of the ebike controller, would makes an energized loop.

Or you can just think it as the brake lever make a short-cut to let the controller knows as “Hey Dude, I’m in and no one braking now so you can power the hub motor at present!”.

But don’t worry, it’s voltage is low enough for safety at about 5 volt.

    您的浏览器不支持 video 标签。

But any braking action on the brake handle cuts off this short circuit.

And it is because this short circuit is cut that the controller is able to know that it is now under braking, “so I should stop supplying power to the hub motor”.

And this is why it calls “Brake and Cut-off Power Type”.

    So for now,

Q1: if your ebike become no riding power suddenly,

Q2: or you just connects battery, controller, hub motor but no power / the hub motor wheel couldn’t spin,

I think you can check that :

    A1:if the brake lever connector been diconnected, or the cable been cutted;

A2: or the brake lever is not connected yet.

Are the brake levers on your ebike the “Brake and Cut-off Power Type”? Let’s figure out.

Any problem or question just feel free to leave us email and let us know please~

  • How to Select an Ebike Conversion Kit: 4 Measurements to Check Before Buying

Before buying a hub-motor ebike conversion kit, check four frame measurements. You only need a ruler or tape measure — but make sure it is long enough.

    1. Front and rear dropout width

    • Front dropout: measure between the inner faces of the fork axle slots. Most Voilamart front kits fit about 100mm (100–103mm).
    • Rear dropout: measure between the inner faces of the rear frame axle slots. Most Voilamart rear kits fit about 135mm (135–137mm).
    • Fat-tire, beach-cruiser, and snow bikes may use wider dropouts, so measure them individually.

    2. Wheel diameter

On a bare frame, measure from the dropout axle slot to the bottom bracket for the rear wheel, or to the fork bottom for the front wheel, then double that “half diameter”. On a complete bike, read the tire sidewall marking, which usually shows the wheel diameter and tire width together.

    3. Maximum tire width

Measure the available width near the bottom bracket and fork bottom. If the tire is too wide, it will rub the frame or fork and the wheel will not spin freely.

    4. Dropout space and axle fit

Check that the dropout opening can accept the hub-motor axle. Voilamart hub-motor axles are typically oval at about 10mm × 9mm.

    Important before ordering

    • A rear hub-motor wheel is only for the rear frame; a front hub-motor wheel is only for the front fork.
    • Dropout width is mostly fixed and can only be adjusted slightly with spacers.
    • Buying the wrong size costs time, even if the item can be returned.

Next, read how to choose the right ebike voltage before finalizing your kit.

  • Ebike Voltage Explained: 36V vs 48V and Battery Watt-Hours

    Quick answer: 36V or 48V?

Think of voltage as the pressure of electricity and current as the flow speed. A 36V system is usually enough for everyday riding and can use more amp-hours within the same 300Wh travel limit. A 48V system is the stronger choice for heavy loads and frequent hills because it can support more powerful hub motors.

Can you take an ebike battery on a plane?

US aviation rules generally allow batteries up to 300 watt-hours (Wh) on board. Ebike batteries are often labeled with volts and amp-hours, so convert them with this formula:

    • Watt-hours = voltage × amp-hours
    • 48V 15Ah = 720Wh — not allowed on board
    • 48V: 300Wh ÷ 48V = 6.25Ah
    • 36V: 300Wh ÷ 36V = 8.33Ah

Why does 36V get more amp-hours for the same 300Wh?

A 36V battery works at lower electrical pressure, so it takes longer to deliver the same total energy. If the allowed energy is fixed at 300Wh, the lower-voltage battery can carry more amp-hours. For travel, a 36V battery gives you more rated capacity inside the same rule.

How much motor power can each voltage support?

    • 36V hub motors: commonly up to about 1kW
    • 48V hub motors: commonly up to about 2kW

    Which should you choose?

    • Choose 36V for flat daily rides, lighter loads, and the best usable capacity under airline Wh limits.
    • Choose 48V or higher for heavy cargo, trailers, steep climbs, or when you need maximum motor power.
